Mind machines are a device that allows you to modify your brain wave states.

Frequency following response (FFR)  also referred to as brain wave entertainment was discovered in the 1930s.  Doctors began recording the brain's electrical activity with electrodes placed on the scalp and with electroencephalograph (EEG) devices.

After the development of the EEG, scientists Adrian and Matthews discovered that repetitive light and sound frequencies were a stimulus to which brain wave activity would react and respond. Various psychologist and researchers used this information for brain wave synchronization (BWS) experiments and therapies.  A noticeable and outstanding  result was the ability to self-direct deep levels of relaxation and focused states of hypnosis.

About 1940, physiologist William Grey Walter discovered that at certain entrainment frequencies, his subjects would enter trance-like states, where they began to experience deep peacefulness, dream-like visions, and other unexpected sensations. In 1958, the first brain wave synchronizer (BWS) was introduced commercially by Sidney A Schneider.  Today BWS is more popularly called a mind machine or a light and sound device.

Schneider, et el, concluded that over 90% of approximately 2,500 subjects treated by 1959 had experienced light to deep hypnotic trance with the use of the BWS. His instrument consisted of a photic stimulator, controlled by the therapist or client, with variable frequencies ranging from low delta (0-1 Hz) to beta frequency (above 13 Hz). Schneider's research identified that each individual became entrained at a specific frequency which led to "a rainbow effect, anesthesia, or dissociation" - "the point of least resistance" for that individual to enter a trance state, assisted by audio tapes or a live hypnotic induction.

Dimly lit candles or soft music help us to relax and calm an overactive mind.  For centuries man has known that flickering light and a melodious rhythm effected body, mind and spirit.  But, no one knew how or why.

Early research into brain wave activity demonstrated that the brain's electrical activity primarily alpha and beta waves would fall follow the flickering light or sound at controlled frequencies.

Technical Information

Brain Wave Patterns - brain nerve cells generate electrical impulses that fluctuate rhythmically in distinct patterns.  The patterns correlate with your thoughts, emotions, state of being and functioning of various systems of the body.

Categories of Brain Wave Patterns:

BETA - the most common pattern - used during waking consciousness.  Beta is associated with concentration, arousal, alertness, and cognition. At its highest, most rapid levels, though, beta is associated with anxiety, disharmony, and unease.

ALPHA - In a relaxed state your brain wave pattern slows to an alpha state.  Alpha patterns vary from deep alpha, a state of deep relaxation often referred to as the "twilight state" between sleep and waking, to the higher end of alpha which is a more focused yet still very relaxed state.  In this state of mind that your ability to learn, process, store and recall large amounts of information quickly and your efficiency is at its highest. It is also called the super learning state.

THETA - Theta is best known as the brain wave state of dreaming sleep, but it is also associated with a number of other beneficial states, including increased creativity, some kinds of "superlearning," increased memory abilities, and what are called integrative experiences. (in which we make broadly-based positive changes in the way we see ourselves, others, or a certain life situation).  The "Ah-has" of life.  The moment when the muddy water is clear and you know the answer.

Dr. Thomas Budzynski, a noted researcher in this field, has said that critical and often self-sabotaging filters of the left brain are by-passed in a theta state, and that in terms of making positive changes in beliefs or habit patterns, "a lot of work gets done very quickly."

Theta is a state of tremendous stress relief.  The slower theta brain wave pattern, the brain manufacturers relaxing endorphins that reduce stress.

DELTA - Delta is the slowest brain wave patterns.  It is the state of dreamless sleep.

The best way to realize the applications and benefits of a mind machine is to use one.  Set a specific goal for yourself and realize how quickly you can achieve it with a mind machine.
